TORONTO (AP) — You don’t expect to see a movie named “Dicks: The Musical” on the marquee and neither did its makers. Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, who created and star in “Dicks: The Musical,” certainly struggled to believe it. But “Dicks: The Musical," a freewheeling queer cult-favorite-to-be, is a gleefully tasteless bid to break free of comedy doldrums. “People maybe want to go for a bigger laugh but they’re afraid they’re going to offend too many people. As Jackson and Sharp developed the movie, they carved out the role of God, as narrator, for Yang.

CNN —The Kristen Welker era of “Meet the Press” is off to a bleak start. Unfortunately, Welker failed spectacularly to meet the moment during her interview with Trump. Welker allowed Trump to make a number of statements wholly untethered to reality on a range of critical issues without tenacious, resolute, or meaningful pushback. It’s arguable that, at this juncture, there is really no need to interview Trump. If it is necessary to interview Trump, newsrooms need to approach the task differently than they would any other interview.

The tech investment behemoth raised nearly $5 billion from Arm's offering while retaining 90.6% of the firm. Known for debt-fuelled acquisition sprees, SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son flagged in June that the company was shifting back into "offence mode" as he highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence. That's after a year of "defence mode" when tech valuations crashed amid higher interest rates and global banking jitters. Few companies in SoftBank's investment portfolio have demonstrated commercial utility in AI, analysts said.

Tom Lee says buy stocks now as 'August sloppiness' winds down

Tom Lee recommends investors take a risk-on approach starting Wednesday as he expects markets will soon bottom. .SPX mountain 2023-07-31 SPX in August Lee thinks that equities are "showing early signs of diverging from higher rates," meaning stocks are sensing that rates could top out soon. "Our view is a calculated bet that stocks are rising, despite higher rates, because the stock market is sensing this turn that [Fundstrat technical strategist Mark] Newton believes could happen in the next week or two," Lee wrote. "In other words, we are saying the last push higher in rates will not proportionately hit stocks." "[Our] view is this will support the picture of a glide path to lower inflation and a softening labor market," Lee wrote.

SoftBank’s Arm-twisting fails to convince

Shareholders already had good reason to take that with a pinch of salt. The Japanese conglomerate’s 478 billion yen ($3.3 billion) net loss, which missed analysts’ estimates, included an increase in the carrying value of chip designer Arm, even though revenue dipped. That allowed the company’s Vision Fund to post a $1.1 billion profit, its first in six quarters. But investors in the Japanese group will be waiting a long time for SoftBank’s new campaign to pay off. A French Festival Focuses (Timidly) on English
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( Laura Cappelle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As soon as the Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues took over at the Avignon Festival, France’s biggest theater event, he announced a symbolic move: Under his direction, there would be a special focus on a different language every year, starting, this summer, with English. There was wincing from some quarters: To many in France, English is already far too culturally dominant. Of several dozen productions in the official lineup of this year’s festival, which runs through July 25, only six plays are predominantly in English. So far, however, the most intriguing discovery has been the sole American entry, “Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge,” from Elevator Repair Service. From tables on opposite sides of the stage, Greig Sargeant (Baldwin) and Ben Williams (Buckley) spar with effective solemnity.

How Disney and DeSantis started feuding
  + stars: | 2023-04-04 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
Ron DeSantis won praise from the right for retaliating against Disney for its CEO’s decision to (rather timidly) wade into the public discourse over a contentious state law. In that first round of Florida’s GOP vs The Walt Disney Company, DeSantis landed a body blow that ultimately cost Disney CEO Bob Chapek his job. DeSantis signed the bill into law, and then set his sights on punishing Disney for daring to challenge him. “This essentially makes Disney the government,” said Ron Peri, a DeSantis pick for the new board, last week. Last week, Iger announced Disney would lay off 7,000 people as part of a $5.5 billion cost-reduction plan.
The sudden sell-off in the pound and U.K. bond markets led economists to anticipate more aggressive interest rate hikes from the Bank of England . I was surprised when the new chancellor spoke over the weekend of the need for even more tax cuts," Summers said on Twitter. U.K. inflation unexpectedly fell to 9.9% in August, and analysts recalibrated their eye-watering expectations after the government stepped in to cap annual household energy bills. 'Emerging market currency crisis'Sterling has fallen by roughly 7-8% on a trade-weighted basis in less than two months, and strategists at Dutch bank ING noted Tuesday that traded volatility levels for the pound are "those you would expect during an emerging market currency crisis." The likening of the U.K. to an emerging market economy has become more prevalent among market commentators in recent days.
